Doomed Voyage

Estimated Work-time: 1 month

Doomed Voyage is D.C punk inspired mini-zine that explores the more creative side of publishing and magazine design. The images used draw influence from halftone screen printing that was popular throughout the 1900’s. The magazine highlights both local bands and shops to help foster the DIY community in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The articles featured speak to the political and musical undertones. My partner and I utilized this along with rough textures to synthesize punk ideas and turn it into a more complete historical design style.

The cover collage, as well as pages 1-6 and “Music Matters” spread, were designed by me, with my partner for the project, Alexis, doing the more community driven pages.

Featured below are some typeface studies I did early on for the project. Testing various titles, along with options for both headers and the general body text. Given the stylistic choices we made, we did variate from these somewhat to keep visual interest and the unexpected and outlandish nature of punk intact. Also shown is some earlier versions of the spreads and suggested changes from peers.
